Teacher Faces DUI And Other Charges

By JIM HOLLAND

A Gaffney High School English teacher faces several charges by the South Carolina Highway Patrol after she was stopped near the school on Tuesday about 5 p.m.

Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald says that 44-year-old Ann Louise Shirley of 2580 Carolina Country Club Road in Spartanburg was charged by Trooper Steve Poole with first offense DUI, first offense DUS, possession of a suspended driver’s license, improper display and failure to register the 2000 Ford Ranger she was operating.

McDougald said the arrest occurred on Twin Bridge Road near GHS after Poole observed a violation by the driver. He stopped the vehicle about 5 p.m. McDougald said Poole determined that Ms. Shirley was under the influence because of her driving, an interview and other investigation.

She was booked at the Cherokee County Detention Center on the five charges and released on a bond of $2,089.

Cherokee County School District officials say Ms. Shirley has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the charges.

She reportedly declined to take a breathalyzer test which is an automatic suspension of a driver’s license for 90 days.

Ms. Shirley’s husband told News Channel 7 that his wife suffered from a medical condition.
